Designing for the formliner: draft, depth, and details that cast cleanly

Depth, draft, and edge details decide whether a formliner panel strips clean or chips. A plain guide to designing texture that casts the way you drew it.

A formliner casts what you design, including the mistakes. Texture that looks great on a drawing can chip on strip, trap air, or refuse to release if the depth and draft are wrong. The good news is that the rules are simple, and designing to them costs you nothing while designing against them costs panels. Here is how to draw texture that casts the way you meant it.

Keep the depth honest

Depth of relief is the first decision. PCI guidance for architectural precast generally keeps design depth in the half inch to one inch range. That range gives you real shadow and texture without asking too much of the pour.

Go deeper than an inch and you can still do it, but the deep area needs room. A deep recess that is also narrow is hard to fill and hard to strip. If you want relief deeper than an inch, give it a sufficiently wide depressed area around it so the concrete consolidates fully into the texture and the panel releases without tearing. Deep and wide casts fine. Deep and pinched fights you.

Draft is what lets the panel let go

Draft is the slope on the sides of any indentation, so the recess is a little wider at the panel face than at its base. That slope is what lets the hardened panel pull away from the liner without the concrete catching and chipping.

PCI guidance commonly points to a minimum positive draft of one inch in one foot for easy stripping, with one in eight preferred. For narrow, ribbed, or delicate sections, go steeper. A thin rib with no draft is a rib that snaps off on strip. When in doubt, add draft. It costs nothing on the drawing and plenty in the yard.

Maintain draft on the sides of every indentation, not just the big ones. The small details are the ones that spall when they are drawn straight-walled.

Treat edges and corners kindly

Sharp arrises are fragile in concrete. A crisp ninety degree corner in the texture wants to chip, both on strip and later in handling and erection. Round or chamfer the edges and corners of your relief. A small radius or a chamfer holds up far better than a knife edge and usually reads just as well in the finished wall.

Plan the joints instead of fighting them

Every liner run has joints, and every panel has edges. Rather than trying to hide a joint where it is bound to show, put it to work. Plan liner joints at the form edges where they naturally resolve, or turn a joint into an intentional demarcation. A groove, a recess, or a rib at the joint line reads as a design decision instead of a defect.

This is where a seamless system changes the math. Advanced’s seamless liners are built so the sheet joint does not show in the finished panel, and starter and ender sheets close out the ends of a run so nothing gets trimmed in the bed. That gives you freedom to place intentional reveals where you want them, not where the liner forced them.

Reveals cost thickness

A reveal is a groove cast into the face, and reveals are typically wider than they are deep. Keep that proportion in mind, because a reveal that is deeper than it is wide is hard to strip and reads as a slot rather than a shadow line.

More important, any reveal removes concrete from the panel. That means it reduces the structural thickness of the panel right along that line. On a load-bearing or thin panel, a deep reveal in the wrong place matters. Coordinate reveal depth and placement with the precaster’s engineer so your shadow lines do not land where the section cannot spare the material.

The short version

Half inch to one inch of depth, positive draft on every recess, rounded or chamfered edges, joints planned as intentional lines, and reveals sized so they do not eat the panel’s structure. Design to those and the liner gives you back exactly what you drew.
